Day 218

Happy 115th Birthday to Senator Everett McKinley Dirksen!
Since today is the anniversary of my favorite Republican's birth, I thought I'd stop by his statue that stands just down the road from where I was born. This man's life has taught me so much over the past four years -- about politics, the 1960s, writing history, and above all, bipartisanship.

  1. Wow!!! That's awesome! It's cool that you actually went there today. This has to be one of my favorites among all your posts!
    Happy birthday, Senator!
    Good on you, Hope!

  2. Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it. I figured it's the least I could do -- and I'm pretty sure I warned you that he would be making an appearance!!
My favorite part is the elephant and donkey at his feet. I remember being really confused by them when I was little. I thought about taking the drive out to his grave, but this was a better picture. He's buried in the same cemetery as my great-grandparents.
